focus: hold the shutter button down halfway. use both hands to take pictures and hold the camera still. keep the camera close to your body

lighting

artificial vs. natural: sun should always be over your shoulder. have good back lighting. clouds are a good thing

rule of thirds: divides a shot into 9 grids ( objects should be in one of the middle corners of the grid). move subject from center of the picture.

importance of background: eliminate unnecessary items in the pictures background. plain backgrounds are best.
